Centre for Text Margins was founded in 2025 at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Our current pilot phase 2025–2028 is made possible by funding from Kone foundation. This makes us the first funded academic initiative in Finland dedicated to the practice and expertise of typographic text design.
Our programme consists of symposia, publications, exhibitions, an archive, and a residency.
At the Centre's heart is the nurturing of practice‑led knowledge and craft. Each year, we offer one professional text designer/writer a 12-month residency. This is an opportunity to deepen and develop self-organised practice in conversation with the Aalto ARTS community, without the pull and limitations of commercial work or the pressure of an academic degree.
During our pilot, our aims are to
- gather together, document, archive, and continue the text design work and expertise at Aalto ARTS
- prototype our residency programme
- specify the working models within the centre and collaborative practices beyond
- build alliances of practice and expertise in Finland and internationally.
